How To Start A Fantasy Novel

How To Start A Fantasy Novel

So, you wanna write a fantasy novel? Awesome! Prepare to dive into a world of dragons, magic swords, and probably a prophecy or two. Don't worry, it's easier than slaying a hydra – promise!

Step 1: Brainstorming Bonanza!

First, let's get those creative juices flowing. Forget about being perfect. Think big, think weird, think… what if squirrels could talk?

Worldbuilding 101 (aka Making Stuff Up)

Every great fantasy novel needs a cool world. Is it a medieval kingdom? A futuristic cyberpunk city ruled by elves? Let your imagination run wild!

Think about the details. What does the currency look like? What are the popular sports? Is there a national anthem sung by trained pigeons?

Seriously, the more details, the richer your world will feel. Just don’t get *too* bogged down – we still need a story!

Meet Your Main Character (aka The Chosen One… Maybe)

Now for the star of the show! This is your protagonist, the hero (or maybe the lovable rogue) who will guide us through this fantastical journey.

Give them flaws! Nobody likes a perfect hero. Maybe they have a fear of spiders, or they can’t resist a good donut.

Even Harry Potter wasn’t perfect; he forgot his invisibility cloak all the time. It's relatable!

Plotting Like a Pro (or Just Winging It)

Okay, time for the actual story. What’s the big problem? A dark lord threatening to take over the world? A stolen magical artifact?

Think about the challenges your character will face. The trials and tribulations! The moments of pure, unadulterated awesome!

Don't be afraid to change things as you go. Sometimes the best ideas come when you're in the middle of writing a dragon fight. Embrace the chaos!

Step 2: Butt in Chair, Fingers on Keys!

Alright, enough planning. It’s time to actually write something. Don’t worry about making it perfect on the first try. Just get the words down!

The First Draft: A Glorious Mess

The first draft is allowed to be terrible. Seriously! Just tell the story. You can fix it later.

Think of it as sculpting. You start with a lump of clay, then you chip away at it until you have a masterpiece (or at least something resembling a masterpiece).

Don’t get discouraged if you get stuck. Just keep writing. Even if it's just “and then they fought a goblin,” just keep going!

Embrace the Inner Editor (But Not Too Much)

Once you have a draft, it’s time to edit. Read it through. Does it make sense? Are there any plot holes the size of dragon lairs?

Cut out the unnecessary stuff. Be brutal! Kill your darlings (unless your darling is a really cool dragon).

But don't over-edit! You don't want to suck all the fun out of your story. Remember that spark that got you started in the first place.

Step 3: Share Your Brilliance (and Prepare to be Amazed)

Congratulations! You’ve written a fantasy novel! Now it’s time to share it with the world. Or, you know, your mom. Either works.

Feedback is Your Friend (Even When it Stings)

Get some beta readers to read your manuscript. These are people who will give you honest feedback. Prepare for constructive criticism! (and maybe a little bit of “that part didn’t make sense”).

Don't take it personally. Remember, they're trying to help you make your story even better.

If you get negative feedback, don’t despair! Even J.R.R. Tolkien probably got some "meh" reviews at some point.

Publishing: The Final Frontier

Once you’re happy with your novel, you can start thinking about publishing. Traditional publishing? Self-publishing? The choice is yours!

Do your research and find the path that’s right for you. And remember, even if you don’t become the next George R.R. Martin overnight, you’ve still accomplished something amazing. You wrote a novel!

Now go forth and create! The world needs more talking squirrels and heroic donut-loving protagonists.
